Last week USA TODAY reported that a hotel in a national chain began offering special rooms for families with autistic children. The Wyndham Garden Hotel in Austin has 5 ‘thoughtful designed’ rooms to ease traveling for parents with autistic children. The rooms feature special door alarms, child proof drawers, short blind strings, cushions on table corners, and special books and toys. The rooms were designed with help by Thoughtful House Center for Children, the local autism research center in Austin. Certified Thoughtful House staff also helped train the hotel staff for certain activities. As the second hotel in the USA offering an autism program, autism advocacy groups hope the trend continues to catch on. To read the entire article on autism aware hotels visit USA TODAY-Travel.
