The New Year is almost here. It’s time to get up to date on the light bulb industry changes that will go into effect starting January 1, 2012. From HGTV Remodels, here’s what you need to know about the New Year and the new light bulb labels.

  • Per the Energy Independence and Security Act, the phaseout of the incandescent light bulb will begin with the 100 watt on January 1, 2012.
  • Light bulbs will now be labeled based on lumens and energy efficiency versus wattage. The Federal Trade Commission is requiring that light bulbs display the lumens and the estimated yearly energy cost on the front.
  • The new labels must also include a Lighting Facts Per Bulb on the back of the package. This information box will contain the brightness, light appearance (correlated color temperature), estimated yearly energy cost, life expectancy and energy used.
To see examples of some of the new labels, visit the HGTV Remodels article online. To read and learn more about lumens and more, visit the Federal Trade Commission website.
