A small space does not have to feel small. With a little creativity and some strategic designing, you can make a small space feel much larger than it actually is. Before you go knocking down walls or rushing to renovate, try these simple and inexpensive methods for opening up a space to feel more comfortable and airy via Interior Design Tutor.

  • To maximize height, incorporate recessed lighting that will not impede on the space such as pendants and sconces. Then add dimmer switches to accommodate different times of day.
  • Kill two birds (or multiple) with one stone using multifunctional furniture like an ottoman that has storage space while able to serve as a seat, foot rest or table at any given time.
  • Look for odd shaped areas and alcoves that could be converted into display areas such as a lighted niche to add a decorative touche without taking up much space.
  • Mirrors and glass tables create the illusion of more space by invoking a sense of openness unlike heavy, dark colored objects.
