Budget-Friendly Tips for Outdoor Lighting

The American Lighting Association reminds us in the Bright Ideas newsletter that, “Creating a beautiful landscape does not have to be expensive. A few well-placed low-voltage path or accent lights can have a huge impact.” Whether you are working with a sweeping landscape or a modest yard, here are some of the tips that ALA suggest for achieving a lot with a little when it comes to outdoor lighting.

  • Outdoor lighting can be easy to install on your own; all you need is a-quality low-voltage fixtures, an outdoor low-voltage copper cable and a transformer.
  • Install a transformer that is larger than you may need initially so that it can support more fixtures later and you won’t have to upgrade when adding to your outdoor lighting design.
  • Three to fourth path lights can adequately illuminate a pathway up to 60 feet long.
  • Add a timer or photocell to conserve energy consumption.
