Lighting is one of the most important elements in the design of a room, yet many homeowners make a good deal of the same mistakes. The wrong type of light fixtures are often placed in spaces that they aren’t capable of correctly illuminating. If you are in the process of redoing the lighting in your home be sure to avoid these four common lighting mistakes.
- Installing down recess lights everywhere thinking the grid design disperses light to every area. They don’t supply a sufficient amount of lighting to vertical surfaces
- Forgetting to add task lighting in the kitchen. In addition to general overhead lighting your counters also need adequate lighting.
- Only using down lights over bathroom vanities. Downlights create unflattering shadows, sidelights are needed to minimize shadows and distribute light evenly.
- Not using ambient, task and accent lighting together. A well designed room should utilize each type of lighting for the best overall illumination.
