October is a big month filled with fall festivities, breast care awareness events and holiday shopping. But there’s another part of October that we’d like to shed light on. October is also Energy Awareness Month. For this year’s Energy Awareness Month, the U.S. Department of Energy through the Federal Energy Management Program is attempting to inspire the nation with the theme, “Turn Words into Action; Turn Action into Results.”

To turn action into results, check the energy efficiency of your home, office and/or facility this month. Make sure lights that are not being used are turned off. Check all your lightbulbs and replace any incandescent lights with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or light-emitting diodes (LEDs). For lighting fixtures used several hours a day, use a 60 to 100 W bulb. With these simple efforts, you can use three-quarters less electricity than before. For more tips on how to check the efficiency of your home, office and/or facility, visit the helpful checklists provided by the U.S. Department of Energy.
